Our robins are back too. A couple of days ago I was standing on my front porch and robin landed on top of a bush right in front of me - about two feet away. Like it was saying "I'm back, - do you have some chow". Just a little while ago my son said there was a robin at the back porch window sill looking for a handout. I don't know if it is the same robin or if there are two.
I also heard a mocking bird and after looking around for it I spied a small one at the driveway. Too small for it to be the one from last year.
So now my Spring entertainment begins. I always enjoy seeing them all when I get up in the morning.

I am glad to read that the robins have arrived in the North. We always have the migrating groups stop here to rest up and get some food before they move on farther up. We had several groups stop by looking for food and a resting place.

I'm sorry I haven't been here much lately.  I have been overwhelmed by all of the changes in my personal business and healthcare coverage.  My old brain has trouble dealing with all the new information and all the changes that are required.  I hope I have everything set up properly now....with the exception of dealing with my new doctor and a new Prescription online pharmacy.  And, also trying to deal with a cranky computer and Google going crazy on changing security requirements.  It has been very trying and my aging brain makes it twice as difficult.  And I haven't even started my taxes!  That is another whole can of worms!

As I have said in the past, I don't cook much anymore--most everything is catered and delivered by one place or another--but I decided to order a food kit from Papa Spuds for Shepard's Pie (which I'll make) and already baked Soda Bread.  That came yesterday and I was surprised to discover that the Soda Bread is sweet and not savory, like I was expecting.  It has a lot of chocolate chips in it and that was new to me. It is typical of Southern breads that they prefer them to be sweet.  I cut a small wedge for each of us, David and me, and it is very good but I will use it as a dessert instead as an accompaniment for the Shepard's Pie.  It is more like what I call a Sally Lunn bread.  Has anyone here made Soda Bread? Do you make it sweet or savory?

Shirley, you sound more like your old self, I'm happy to see.  It's really hard dealing with all these changes to our lives, isn't it?  Each day becomes a challenge.  At least, it keeps my aging brain working and that is good....I guess.  ???

Take care, All.

Phyllis, good to see you. I just posted two Irish Soda Breads. I make the second one , it isn't too sweet and one could leave the raisins out if need be.

Good morning; it's minus 17 now, and we're unlikely to see any robins until mid to late May. They're always one of the last ones to arrive back north. They always seem to come when the Asian cranes do. We generally have several smaller birds, wrens, sparrows, redbills, and chickadees that overwinter yearly.

What is interesting about these birds is each late fall, they form huge multi-species flocks for protection. In the spring, these large flocks break up into the summer species-specific smaller communities.

In the winter, the ravens come down from the mountains and return to the mountains in the spring. We don't have the bald eagles that live in the southeast part of the state. The Homer fishing fleet brings them in the thousands, a sight to see. Locally we have giant golden eagles. We also have numerous hawks and owls that may or may not overwinter.

I didn't know that they made sweet-soda bread. It doesn't sound appetizing, but I suppose if you put enough sugar in it. Amy, your recipe #1159 is more like the ones I make.

I had a nice long post ready to go and I punched the wrong button.  I lack the energy to redo it so I'll try tomorrow.  Good night and God Bless!

Good morning..

I peeked out and no new snow.yet. They say we are to get that :tickedoff: heavy snow while to the south of us they are to get rain. Mr SB doees NOT like that heavy snow. Baking today is on the agenda, soda bread and will do corned beef and cabbage to go along with the rest of our dinner.

Patricia, I would love to sit near the water and watch all these birds fly about. Amazing what entertains me for hours on end.

Jane, I was happy to see your post! Hope you can have an easy day today.

Better get going..

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

GOOD MORING, EVERYFRIEND!  I've already been busy up the gazoo!  But I'm going to try to remember which button to press when I'm finished here.

Yesterday, on the way home from the store, Cathy and I came past the pond where the geese are gathering.  I can hear them whenever I'm out in my yard but yesterday I saw them!  There must have been a couple of hundred on the pond.  I live between the pond and the river (much closer to the pond) and the geese and ducks use them both for "motels" on their way North.  I've seen numerous VEES in the sky and I love hearing the chat with each other on the way!

No Cooper today!  His mommy has the day off.  She did say she might stop over at some point but it depends on how tired she is and how much she needs to do at home.  We'll see!

I have all the stuff out in the kitchen for my Irish Soda Bread and that's next on my agenda!    Have a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!  (Now here goes the button press)

Our Irish Soda bread is cooling and so it a doulbe brownie..ot sure if that will be cut up into 1 inch pieces put in a bowl with chocolate pudding and cherry pie filling with whipping cream on top or just eat the way it is. All these decisions.

Good morning all! We are still in the deep freeze at minus 18. Twice now, we've missed warming up this week, and now they're telling us we will do so today and over the weekend. Promises, promises!

Amy, back when I could walk about unfettered, I would spend hours at the Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge and Sanctuary in the areas open to the public. If you had any blues or a headache, the refuge was guaranteed to cure either. They say over 80,000 birds and butterflies worldwide stop there to rest on their journies or to breed.

JaneS

It looks like it's been a quiet day in the Soda Shoppe.  About 9 1\2 hours and nobody even ordered a soda or a cup or coffee.

I was out walking today and I counted upwards of a couple hundred geese flying overhead.  I was out maybe a total of about a half hour, maybe 45 minutes.  They just never stopped moving and making sounds!  I was totally amazed!

I had my Irish Soda Bread and there's a bit left!  I'll probably finish it off tomorrow.

Now I'm going to settle down and try to sleep.  Cooper won't be here until about 10:15 so I can take my time.  I wish you all a peaceful night's sleep and a happy tomorrow.  God Bless!

Stopping in for a quick peek. Busy day around here & I am ready for bed. It is really cold out so I've been warned oxygen doesn't work at these temps & stay inside. Andy came by to fix a couple things for me & put out bird seed & some stale crackers for the ones that eat on the ground. I am surprised that this crazy robin (pretty sure one that was born on the light fixture) was eating those crackers. We pour water or old milk over the crackers or dry bread & all the birds go wild over it. Have quite a few red wing blackbirds that come up from the river, still some little snowbirds (juncos) around. We haven't seen many of the Canadian geese here but understand they have moved a few miles outside this area. Lots of the little house finches, seem to be brighter red this year.... maybe it's the cataract surgery.  ;)

Sweet dreams to all, God Bless. Shirley/Tisie

Amy

Good morning..

When I went to bed it was lightly snowing but must have stopped, no accumulation to deal with yet.

Our supper was good and we have enough for tonight if we wish.  I see a "mouse" big one at that has been into the brownies in the night.

No robins here or geese..most lakes are still froze over and very little bare ground here. Folks have till the end of the month to get their fish huts off the lake.

Better get ready to meet the day.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  Right now it's 32º here but heading for a high of 45 and cloudy!

I didn't have a particularly good night last night and I'm guessing there will be a nap or two today,  I'm having my breakfast and then getting ready to meet up with Cooper mid morning today.  Nothing else on the agenda.  I was thinking that Cooper and I might take a walk over to pond today and see if the geese are there of if they've moved on.  Don't know if we'll do that or not but it's a possibility!

I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

I slept like a log last night.  I was so tired when I went to bed I didn't bother to read or listen to calming music.  Turned the light out as soon as I hit the bed and was asleep almost instantly.  I wore myself out with cooking even though David helped me with lifting heavy pans and fetching pantry supplies...he even stirred the pot while I sat and rested for a few minutes.  But, it was all worth it.....the Shepherd's Pie was delicious and we even have enough left over for another meal. The fresh ingredients (even the ground beef from a local cattle farm) plus printed recipe from Papa Spuds makes a big dish but it was sooooo good.  I like their food kits and if I do anymore cooking I'll order a kit from them again.

Cloudy and chilly here but the sun is trying to peep out.

Take care, All.

We did get a bit more snow but again, nothing to worry about. Laundry blew out on the line with the stiff breeze, taking some off some off the pins but didn't put them on the ground.

Phyllis , that sounds like the perfect meal!! My friend and I stopped at a restaurant one time and ordered the Shepherd's Pie, imagine our surprise when it came and the meat wasn't hamburg but thinly sliced roast beef! No matter though as it too was delicious!!

Now the day is over,
Night is drawing nigh.
Shadows of the evening
Steal across the sky!

One of the old songs from my Girl Scout camping days!  I think of it every evening when my day is pretty much over.  And I sing it very quietly so no one can hear me!  I can't carry a tune in a box!

Today was a good one!  I got some things done and Cooper and I had three nice walks.  It stopped raining about an hour before he got here so we had a good day to be out!  We both took a nap when we got back from our afternoon walk and he came and woke me up and I figured out that he got me ready just in time to make his dinner.  Since he gets up very early, he also eats his supper very early.  I always wonder how he knows it's time but he's always right!

I wish you all a peaceful night's sleep and a happy tomorrow.  God Bless!

It is a burrrrrrrrrrr cold night here & to really drop down overnight. The birds were so happy when Andy showed up to feed them & the ground critters. It was time to clean out the frig, too many things I wasn't sure how old so will have a happy opossum tonight!

Tomorrow is "clean up Shirley day". Trim hair, shower & wash hair & see if I can find some clothes that fit. I look like something the cat dragged in.

I've never had or made a shepherd's pie but sounds like my kind of food. Another day, the kitchen is cleaned & I plan to go to bed as soon as I get my jammies on.  Sweet dreams and God Bless Every Friend!

Amy

Good morning...
Brrr it is cold here too! No Patricia's deep cold of -18° but  -2° with a dusting of new snow.
A day of rest here, will visit the sewing room and work on my quilt for a bit.

Jane, these two furkids know when it is treat time just before news, They will start to bug you and give you the "look" as if to say don't you know what time it is.

Better get my day going.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  It's going to be a cold one here too.  But thank goodness, it won't be as cold as it is in Canada or Alaska!  Our low is 21º.

I'm ready for church and my son is going to pick me up and drop me off there and friends will bring me home.  Cooper will be dropped off while I'm at church and he's going to be one happy doggie when I get home!  And his "happy" makes me happy, too!

I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

I know Spring is on it's way, because the sun was sneaking in this morning between the slats of the blinds. There's always one little opening that lets the sun hit you right in the face. Even though we're looking at spring, it's still cold - about28 this morning.
My crocus are up and flowering and this year the squirrels haven't eaten them --- yet.
Hope everyone's weather turns good and gives us some nice outside time.

Shhhh...don't tell Jane that my low this morning was plus 22. Or Amy, that my minus 18 morphed into plus 33 by day's end. :)

Animals understand time, not only by events commonly occurring around a specific time but by understanding circadian rhythms, the 24-hour cycles of a body's internal clock. Plus, they sense more than we do as we live by an artificial clock or time zone.

They understand their name and the names of other humans or animals they live with or are often around. They pick up and understand routines, such as a person picking up keys or dressing in different clothes, or even actions relevant to a regular activity, such as taking out a suitcase. This is why dogs often make good therapy dogs and good police or military dogs.

There was a case a long time ago where they were teaching sign language to apes, monkeys, and orangutans. The animals began on their own, putting words and sentences together, and the orangutans started not only doing that but teaching sign language to their young and other orangutans.

Humans have a bad habit of assuming an animal is dumb if they don't speak that human language.

Amy

Patricia our temp has had a fight to get up to 18° F at the moment and from here on in it is all downhill.  Tis very windy even though the sun is shining it is cold out.
All you have to do here is go outside and give a shrill whistle and the crows will come for their food. When I was hand milking a cow I would try and split the time so we would ease into the time change. Just like us animals are creatures of habit.

33 ,you say.....balmy weather!!!

Right now, Amy, at 1:52 pm, it's plus 34, and we're to have a high of plus 40. They promise snow all next week. My feeling of sunburnt skin is now better and not painfully dry, as are my nasal bits.

Poor Canada and the US's northeast are pummeled with strange, unseasonable cold weather.

With our ravens, no crows here; all you need to do is leave something unattended, and it's gone. They've learned to watch people ice fishing, pull up the line, and make off with the catch if the fisherman is distracted, and in parking lots, people are told to cover their truck beds, especially if they have some attractive garbage bits back there.
