Good morning..

Heading back into fry weather this week and we are starting with 40° at the moment. Not sure what is on for today, I did want to cut down a few small trees but we will see how the weather behaves. So far there is no ban on brush etc at the dump and I would like to get this job done and the brush taken away.

Better get the day started.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good morning,
Rain day yesterday. The ground is still wet. It was 48°F when I got up. Forecasted to be a high of 72°. Currently partly cloudy. Back to my usual chores.🙂

Have a great day!

patricia19

Good morning, Hi CC, nice to see you! I miss Jane too, I hope she gets her computer woes fixed soon. And OLM, we're having the same weather here as you report. At lest until this Sunday. And my arthritis is having a party today and my right leg is dancing to its tune. :(

Good morning, Amy, or afternoon in your area.

A good morning to Rick and all looking in or have yet to post.

I found this interesting, as I know some jellyfish can sting,

"Jellyfish can evaporate if left out in the sun.

While we humans can quite happily sit out in the sun for hours (with adequate sun protection, of course), jellyfish can disappear completely if washed ashore on a sunny day. This is because a jellyfish's delicate body is composed of at least 95% water, unlike the human adult body, which is about 60% water.

As you may suppose, jellyfish are jellylike in consistency — at least when well hydrated — but they aren't actually fish. They are in fact plankton, ranging in size from less than an inch to nearly 8 feet long, with tentacles that can measure an impressive 100 feet or more. (The largest jellyfish is longer than a blue whale.) Jellyfish have no bones, no brain, and no heart, and they use only rudimentary sensory nerves at the base of their tentacles to detect light and odors.

Due to their structure and exceptionally high water content, jellyfish can evaporate within hours in a process known as deliquescing if they're stranded on a beach in the sun. The jellyfish shrinks as its water evaporates away, leaving behind nothing but a faint imprint on the sand."

Amy

Patricia, it is the afternoon and time is slipping away! Must admit I have been having fun watching the crows adapt to the new water dish. At first they skirted it as much as possible but don't seem to mind it today. A crow spead is wingsout over the corn and layed there for a while, I did get some photos but it was through a screen. :( I have never watched a crow do that.
Trying quinoa tonight, will let you know how it went.

You should also try it with brown rice and garlic.

so_P_bubble

Our beach is swamped with jellyfish at present, apparently because of warming sea water. They sting terribly and a 6y old girl is in hospital with burn-like patches all over her body.

Some are about 30 cm long and when on the shore sand, they do not seem to evaporate. They will be buried in the sand late at night by the beach cleaners.

It is happening when kids are in summer holiday and the weather is so hot: 33 C - about 92F today, but because of the high humidity it feels like 37 C or about 99F.

Amy

Good morning..

Starting out at 46° and behaving for the most part....the temp not me. Great sleeping weather with no a/c running and windows open.

A day of catching up on things that got by thhe wayside and making more pastry.

Bubble, you may keep the jellyfish and the temps! WOW!

Patricia, you ..I will stick to meat and taters.

Rick, how is your weather? Are you getting any relief from the fry  temps?

OLM, difficult for the ground to soak up the rain when it is has been dry for so long. I mowed the  little trees that were growing and the weeds...grass is burnt till we get more rain .Amazing that the trees and weeds can grow but grass goes into a dormancy.

Enjoty your day and stay safe.

Good morning Amy and everyone who posted, will post or checks in. 46°F and sunny. Heading to 80°F high.

The Jelly fish stuff is interesting. Sad to hear about the little girl Bubble ☹️ As a child we went to the Oregon coast often. They didn't seem to evaporate there either. But the Oregon coast is pretty humid. I used to joke that we got 5 sunny days a year, that and 'real Oregonians grew webs between their toes, like beavers.' 😁 Back before I got disabled, and we were living in the high desert of the Columbia Basin, It was typical to survey 8-10 hrs in 110-120° weather. My webs dried to powder and blew away. 😄

Amy, I'm having difficulty visualizing this, " A crow spead is wingsout over the corn and layed there for a while..." Can you explain a bit more?

In my last post I used the term 'wet.' Perhaps that was misleading. Its holding the water, not that the water is staying on top. Its volcanic clay, several feet deep. The previous rain wasn't very hard or long, so the water was sucked down into the deeper clay rather quickly with the surface drying out. This time it rained 'harder' and considerably longer. The soil and forest got a really good drink. The clay dries to a very light grey-white. When there's moisture its dark grey, like gun metal. It was nice to see that it got enough to retain moisture. Its still dark grey this morning.

Yesterday I had to wear my rain boots to wade into the wet undergrowth to work on one of the large trees that went down over the winter. I'll probably have to wear them again this morning. There was a heavy mist over the big meadow when we got up.

Today I plan on making ice cream. I got this nifty ice cream maker that is self freezing. No more ice/salt or pre freezing the bowl. It weighs a lot, but thats o.k.. It cleans up easy. I made it a tight fitting canvas cover to keep out the dirt and dog hair, and store it under the dinette bench on Rosie's side.

I'm continuing to research my stove. One gentleman on a forum posted that the company discontinued the A line, and all other's except the B line but I can't find when. Mine is a CRA-18. I have only found B line models online. Mine's solid green enameled, not white with green. I don't know if solid green predated the white with green, or vice versa. An interesting brain puzzle. I did find out that their oven compartments are insulated with asbestos sandwiched between two sheets of steel. As long as the asbestos isn't powdered, they're supposed to be safe. Amazon has a test kit. 😯

Have a really great day everyone.

Good morning, I have no idea what our weather is doing. The skies are cloudy and smoky. Yesterday and this morning, deep purple low-lying clouds never dropped any moisture but slowly sailed on by to the east. Fox's weather report says presently 55, but AccuWeather says 66, and tonight 48. Tomorrow, they say 80 for a high.

Forestry Department says, "On many fires across Alaska, fire managers continue to downsize resources, backhaul equipment, and release crews as they complete their assignments. However, some fires still have plenty of work to be done, including mopping up, cutting down hazardous trees, and even preparing for potential strategic firing operations in some instances.

Wildfire season in Alaska can last into the rest of summer. Although conditions have currently moderated, it doesn't mean a hot and dry spell won't bring increased fire behavior and the potential for movement. Containment percentages won't always rise substantially until fire managers are certain that fire lines will hold in the event conditions change, especially those fires in populated areas. However, substantial work has been completed. Many of the remote fires that are not threatening any infrastructure or values will continue to be monitored by fire managers throughout the season."  Level 1 and 2 (READY, SET) evacuations remain in effect.

Today is another inside day, only need to return some books, but luckily the mobile library comes to our building. I'm still stiff and sore with my weather related osteoporosis.

Meet and greets, morning routines, and feeding Farrah and I are done. Coffee's almost done as well.

Re the jellyfish not evaporating is another of those cases where the exceptions don't always prove the rule.  Bubble, I hope the child is doing better.

Amy, I gather the quinoa wasn't a hit.

OLM, I see you're having another busy day.

OnLonelyMountain

Hi Patricia,
I only cut wood for 2 hours. My battery ran out and someone unplugged my charger with the spare :P . So I making the ice cream. Not labor intesive. Just sitting here listening to it stir. It better hurry or th chocolate sauce will be all gone before the ice cream gets out.  ;)

Amy

Good morning

We are heading back into fry weather ,temp is 64° at the moment.

Need to pck up meds and then home to carry on.Some jobs that didn't get done yesterday may get done today using the electric chainsaw. Can't say I am that impressed with using it compared to my P38 but it works. I agree with knocking back the sauce first.me it would be butterscotch sauce .

Patricia, lets just say if there was a shortage on quinoa it won't be because of us.

Rick, sound of the a/c is on again today. We are to get into the 90's and possible storm. Hope you have better weather there.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good morning Amy😆🤣😁,I managed to refrain enough to have some left for the ice cream.😋 Just barely.

I'm up so early I have no idea what the temp is. Too dark to read the thermometer. The forecast says high of 85°F. I intend to get another UTV load off that tree if I can. The diameter is getting big enough my 16" bar is struggling to handle it. Not much peaking out the other side. I do love my GreenWorks electric, cordless chainsaw. Plenty of power. I definitely need to fill drinking water today. I haven't checked, but may need to do Dump & Fill as well. So much excitement 🙄.

I like quinoa. Tasty. Looks like tiny spaghetti Os when cooked.😁

Good morning everyone! It's presently 54 and heading up to only 65. Meets and greets, morning coffee and routines are finished and everyone's been fed. Nothing new here, unfortunately, I decided on Monday to rearrange and reorganize my laptop and all nine of my externals.

And while I keep moving stuff around, my computer tells me my disk is full and needs refreshing. I also, in my zest to re-arrange and to re-organize, found some old PSP lessons from the nineties and decided to retake those.

We're still having the low-hanging clouds moving eastward, however they're a gray rather than purple color. I don't know who's getting that rain, but it's not us, or the fires. However, those clouds may be for the Yukon Territory, and they may need them more than us. I do think the cooler air may help us.

Amy

Good morning.

Working of the power from the generator this morning. We had a storm go through last night and at 8 pm we were left in the dark. Power should be back on by 9 pm tonight they said.

Not sure how the day will go now as planned. Oh well just take it as it comes. We did get some rain last night but really could use a lot more for the garden.

OLM, sorry, I forgot to answer your question about the crow with his wings spread out over the food. I am not sure why he did this, I joked that he was saying grace or he was saying all mine!! Never saw this action from them before. I did run and get my tablet and took some photos but they are throuh the sreen on the window and didn't turn out that great.

Rick, what type of weather did you get last night? Storm rattled through here but not close to cause a problem other than power outage.

Better go check the gen for gas.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good morning Amy and all,
The crow's behavior was certainly interesting. 🤔

I hope everyone enduring high temps/humidity is able to stay cool and dry. We started at 60°F but have dropped to 59°. Our expected high is forecasted for 81°F. Its sunny.

There was a fire north of us yesterday. Its posted at 300ac, but the large fire map hasn't been updated so I don't know if its contained or just how far away it is yet. I do not have any smoke this morning. We did last night.

I only was able to make one more cut from the big tree yesterday. My bar was too short. The butts are also getting too heavy for me to load without straining my back.  I moved on to cutting up smaller windfalls, and Gkid push overs. I'll continue with that today as long as I'm able. Probably clean up a slash pile or 2. Ron is scheduled to arrive tonight. I know he intends to bring a screendoor for the tiny house. He wants to trim the edge of the loft deck around the pull down stairs, then he'll finally begin the insulation. Once he vacuums up the sawdust I'll vacuum the wood cookstove's inner chambers. He's bringing me a good wirebrush to clean off the creasote.

Take care of yourselves today.🙂

Nothing here last night, but today is starting off as FRY. Sort of a fry Friday. Not even 10:00 yet and it's 84°. Weatherman calling for 98°. Time to lay low and keep the A/c going. These hot spells often end with some good thunder boomers. I'll just have to wait and see.

Good morning,

OLM, You can get a better understanding of weather, especially fires in your area, by using, (Linking to); your state's dept. of forestry's website.

For example, New York's Division or Department of Forestry and Fire protection.

MarsGal

You Tube has a whole bunch of clips on this behavior. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=anting+birds

And here is an article from BirdWatching which includes a list of birds that indulge in the behavior and possible other reasons for it.

Good afternoon,
Thank you Patricia. The sites I monitor are the interagency sites coordinating the state, federal, tribal, municipal and as necessary the National Guard fire fighting units. One is for fires under 100 ac. When they're larger that site transfers them to the large fire interagency coordinators. I just check earlier than they update many times. I get up at 4:30-5:30 and get to work as early as possible while its cool. They focus on deploying resources to the fires, sometimes they don't post up the latest info when a certain person may want what she wants when she wants it 🙄, if they're extremely busy.

MG I'll try to take a gander at those links tomorrow on patrol. The hornets and yellow javkets were terrible so we didn't get much time on the internet this afternoon.

Keep cool Rick!

Amy

Good morning..

Well yesterday was (not) interesting. First we lost power then internet went down. :(  Power came back on around 7 pm , put the generator away and out the power went again. It didn't stay out long but it meant hooking up again.

Today is take brush away, laundry and baking...will see just how much power I have left to get it all done. Nice to have the a/c back on too!!

MG, that was interesting, I sent your info on to a friend as she didn't know why crow did that. Thank you! That was the first time I saw a crow do that!

Better get the day on the roll.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Marilyne hasn't posted for a week, a little unusual for her. I hope she is okay.

It is already 76o and muggy. More rain on the way this afternoon. The good news is that it may not get to 90o.

I got a few small things done yesterday, but mostly I read or was on the computer. Today will likely be similar. The only things I have on my agenda today are to finish up a library book, make a trip to the pharmacy. In small spurts I am continuing my quest to find more stuff to sort, rearrange or pitch. The cats are in need of another nail clipping session.

That's pretty much it, nothing exciting.

patricia19

Good morning, it's 58 presently with a high of 78 or 81 depending on which website you're at. All the morning routines are finished and coffee's almost done.

I have a breakfast date with friends, and then I'll return to sorting out my nine externals. The problem has been that much of the information has been either spread across too many or duplicated. Since they go back to 1999, this has been frustrating, and I want to sort them into categories.

I've also gotten back into taking PSP lessons, just in time for them to begin their summer recess until September third. I did finish applying, was accepted and have finished and returned the first five lessons. I may also, in September, look into reapplying for more PSP lessons and looking at returning to various graphic groups. One of my externals listed most of my past graphic history which I had forgotten, but was pleased to see.

It's getting time to leave, so I'll wish everyone a good day as they would like it, as Lloyd used to say.

Quote from: MarsGal on July 14, 2025, 08:32:35 PMIs JaneS still having computer trouble? Haven't seen a post from her since the beginning of the month.

Mechanicsburg just reported its first murder here in 20 years. I think it was near where Jane's relative lives that she comes down to visit on occasion. The accused was sitting in the front yard waiting for the cops. He is apparently claiming self defense.

I think we are done with our afternoon rain. Not expecting any more for a few days.

MarsGal

Patricia, was there a comment or question to the repost of my July 14 message? I don't see it, but what I did see is a grammar "mishap" on the second line of paragraph two. "That" should read "whom".

Overnight we had overhead or close-by thunder and lightning along with the rain instead of it passing mostly to the south of us. More rain expected throughout the day. Current temp is 74o. So much for going to my sister's to pick up a bookshelf she doesn't want. The bookshelf is in the same style and color of others I have, so it will not look out-of-place.

Amy

Good morning

We did have a light rain overnight, very light!

We did get the brush away to the dump yesterday then home to do laundry and get the tart shells ready to fill.

Will finish off the tarts and bedding today then rest!

MG, Jane peeked in yesterday but is still having a problem with her computer.

Patricia, hope you had a great time out with your friends yesterday.

Rick, we are still using our a/c and hope the weather cools down a lot. Rather leave the windows open than use the a/c.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.
