Nothing new here, it's cold, I'm doing laundry and Farrah is sleeping.

Hi everyone.  It is another beautiful, sunny and chilly 34 degree day here.  We will only be in the low 40's this afternoon.  The only thing on the schedule for today is my noon meeting.  Pat may want to go to COSTCO and order new glasses.  She has had the prescription for some time.  We had a big turnout for both Sunday School and Church yesterday.  The church actually exceeded its budget last year and ended up in the black.  I think this is the first Church I have ever attended that has experienced this.

Patricia, I will check out that link as have plenty of room on this computer to have the Gmail archive downloaded to it.  Thanks for the link.

Marilyne

Looks like no one has been here since Larry checked in this morning?  Very few posts today in any of the forums.

Well, we had out big rainstorm on Sunday, and looks like another one heading our way tomorrow.  Some areas were flooded, and lots of mud and rock slides on the highway just outside of the town where I live.  This is the last "outpost" before heading over the mountain pass, to Santa Cruz (beach) so we are somewhat higher elevation than San Jose, and get lots more rain.

My brother lives in the town of Forestville, which is pretty much under water tonight.  It's located on the Russian River, about 65 miles north of us.  I talked to him today, and they are okay, because their house is way up on the side of a hill, looking down on the river.  However, they are trapped up there until the flood waters start to recede.

I just hope that all this rain means the drought is finally over!?

angelface555

Marilyne, I live in the Interior which is nothing but arboreal forests and watershed valleys, nature wise. There are 4,000 miles of the major rivers alone and that is not counting all of the lakes, streams, creeks, sloughs and lesser rivers and hot springs.

Yet we have been under a severe drought since 2004 when we were almost decimated by wide swept forest fires. The fish runs were very poor and we had no real snow to speak of since the last three years. There were jokes about guys clearing their driveways with tablespoons. Last year, they had to bring in snow by railcar for the annual dog races!  Then the last two summers were near constant rain. Last summer was said to have less than five clear days in four months. Everyone was saying the drought was over.

Then the Forestry Service and Fish and Game, both state and federal came out and said no. The drought will not end unless and until we have very heavy snows in the mountains. They had all types of promises, graphs, and history, that I don't remember to back this up. Now with all this local snow and more promised and through February, we are cautiously optimistic.

Now it sounds as if you live in Oregon or perhaps Northern California, so I am totally ignorant of your weather patterns, but I would assume the whole snow in the mountains would be the same there as well?

Hi everyone.  It is currently 28 degrees but with the expectation of the mid-40's this afternoon.  We have a pretty busy day planned as Pat has a doctor's appointment at 10:15.  After that we plan on stopping at COSTCO so she can ordered new glasses, I can get mine adjusted and to pick up a few items as well as fill the gas tank for the car.  We also need to go to Walmart to pick up prescriptions for Pat.  Later this afternoon or early evening we plan on going to Ruby Tuesday's for our main meal of the day.

I didn't make it through all of the college football championship last evening but only the first half.  It looked like Alabama would win so was quite surprised when I looked at the score this morning and saw that our Clemson team had won.  It is a great honor for a South Carolina school.

Marilyne, nice to read that neither you nor your brother are in danger from the flooding.  I saw a couple of pictures of the flooding and rock slides on the news last night.

Patricia, with all the rain and snow that Alaska has had since last summer I sure hope your drought is over.

If you haven't seen this I think you may find it very interesting:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h60r2HPsiuM

Mary Ann

Marilyne, I read so often about mudslides on the west coast, so I wonder about your brother's location on a hillside.  Maybe it isn't the same sort of hillside as those of mudslides.  I have been seeing your weather on the Weather Channel.

Larry, I love those mathematical expressions.

At 9:45 am we have 35 degrees and a few days ago we were around 10 and 11 degrees.  We've had snow, but nothing to bother about.  Our snowplows have taken care of what snow we've had fall.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - My brother's house looks to me, to be vulnerable to sliding down the hill!  From their deck, it's a beautiful view of the Redwood trees and the Russian River, down below - but seems to be perched precariously.  There are many homes built on the side of that high hill.  However, they have lived there for about 30 years, and they don't seem concerned.  The Weather Channel mentioned Forestville, and the Russian River, yesterday, but I don't know if that was just local or nationwide?

Larry - Although neither my husband or I have any connection to Alabama or Clemson, we were hoping for a Clemson victory.  Just seems like Alabama has had more than their share of wins over the years, so time for another team to get the glory for a change.

Patricia, I live in California, in the San Francisco Bay area.  It's the other Marilyn, who posts in Bosom Buddies, who lives in Oregon.

We are at 27 degrees and still snowing.  :(

angelface555

Unfortunately Marilyne, I was going by the name of the river. I knew there were more than one with that name as we have one about 40 miles southeast of Soldotna that is a major spot for Kings, (salmon, that is). So even though your brother was mentioned, I somehow thought you lived close. San Franciso is in North California so I wasn't far off, entirely by chance.   ;)

Mary Ann

Looking at Lake Michigan, it looks as if there is ice out beyond the outer lighthouse and there is snow on the ice.  I hope no one is misled by the ice because it is not thick enough to support any weight.  For a few days we are to have temps over freezing so I think the ice will disappear as our present temp is 43 degrees.

It is raining here now, a light rain, but cold and raw.  It could turn to ice tonight when we dip below freezing temps.  I'm happy to stay inside but Tom might drive for Uber tonight; he usually doesn't drive for them except long weekends because of more weekend activities.

Terrible pics coming from Reno, NV area.  Told Candy she got out of there just in time.  Howevfr my g/daughter and her two kids still live near there.  Just talked to her and so far they are ok  I shared some of the pics and videos on FB  you can see.
Forgot to mention that Reno is already flooding.

Beverly

Joan - Hope your granddaughter and her children stay safe.

There is some wicked weather out west. I wouldn't like living with the threat of mudslides, etc.  Florida has its hurricanes but unless you live near the beaches there's not much danger of losing your house. We chose central Florida for that reason!

Mary Ann

We've had quite a lot of rain tonight and it looks as if it will turn to snow, but we are having nothing like the western states are having.

Our temp is about 35-36 degrees but radar shows snow.  Our pond has ice on it but only a thin coat.

Hi everyone.  I started my day with the temperature outside of 54 degrees and it is overcast this morning with very little chance of rain today.  Yesterday was a full day that left both of us worn out.  As usual the doctor's appointment took well over an hour, most of the time waiting.  She then had to go fairly close by and have a couple of x-rays done on her back and hip.  By this time it was after lunch and we decided to have our big meal at Cracker Barrel, which was close to where the x-ray was taken.  We had a good meal and then on the way home stopped at COSTCO.  I had my glasses adjusted and Pat started to pick out new frames.  I then started doing the list shopping.  Fortunately I had been able to get an electric cart to use and that really helped.  However, Pat decided she was too tired and her back hurt too bad to make a decision on the new frames so waited for me in the food court area while I finished the shopping.  It was around 3 pm when we got home and we both took naps but were still tired.  I went to bed early and had a good nights sleep and she did also.

Today has much less strenuous schedule.  Pat has an appointment at 9:30 to get her hair cut and then at 4 pm an appointment with the Chiropractor.  At 5:30 I will meet Scott and Jennifer at the Church for our Wednesday night dinner and then they will come out to the house for awhile.

Marilyne, I saw a report on the NBC National News about the flooding and terrible conditions at Forestville and that area in general.  I didn't realize that the Clemson victory on Monday night was a last second touchdown after Alabama had gone ahead with just 2 minutes to go in the game and I had missed the excitement.

Joan, it sounds like you are having a winter for the record books with all that snow.  Glad your granddaughter and great grandchildren are OK in the Reno area.

Beverly, I am also glad we don't live near the ocean and don't have too much to worry about with hurricanes other than a lot of rain and I suppose the possibility of tornadoes.

Mary Ann, it sounds like you will be having some nicer and warmer weather, which I expect will be much appreicated in mid-January. Sure hope you missed any icing during the night.

Mary Ann

I am just back from the first installment of a crown on one of my teeth.  It's been many years since I have had a crown.  The appointment took 1 1/2 hours.  I will go back in two weeks to have the permanent crown put in.  I felt hardly a thing today.

Tom and I may be the only ones for lunch today as he had not heard from Terry yet.  I am sure Terry and Jan expect to meet us wherever because Jan mentioned it to Dot yesterday.  Dot cannot make it as she has a book club today.  Tom told me where we would go but I didn't understand so I'll go wherever the car takes me.  Today is Terry's 58th birthday; it seems like only yesterday he was a little boy - a cute little boy!

My hearing aids are telling me the batteries of both aids need replacing.  I like it when they both go at the same time and even though I put them in at the same time, they don't always go at the same time.

We have an overcast day and our temp at present is around 35 degrees.  We may go a bit higher but not too much so.  We had so much rain last evening that we lost a lot of the snow on the ground.  That makes it safe for me to go to the mail box!

It is about 29 degrees and still snowing.  :(

Mary Ann

Joan, it is about 40 degrees here and we've had rain.  I think usually our area climates are reversed.  We had rain last night that nearly eliminated the snow.  That should change in a day or two.

Mary Ann

wjoan

Mary Ann, I always thought that snow was so pretty.  Now having it for almost a month, my mind has changed on that.  LOL

Marilyne

It's still raining off and on here, but the worst of it is over. However, rivers are continuing to eise, so lots of flooding going on throughout Northern CA, plus, trees toppling over with no warning.  We lost electrical power three separate times, but the longest outage was only two hours, so not bad at all.

Now the sun is trying to break through the clouds, but not succeeding yet.  My cat Winnie, is anxious to go outside, so I'll go with him, and take a walk around the back yard, to see if there is any damage. :-\

Mary Ann

Joan, snow is beautiful when it first falls but after a few days of being driven on and being dirty, the beauty is gone.  I drove to work many years in the snow on snow-covered roads.  I am happy to be inside, looking out at the stuff - pretty or not!

Marilyne, Kendrick sits by the slider occasionally and I ask him if he wants to go out on the deck.  So I open the door and he dashes out.  The snow is only in the middle of the deck so he walks around the edge, sniffing at the snow and always keeping an eye on me.  After a few minutes, he's ready to come inside.  I do not want him to get outside where he would be more free because he would not want to come in when I want him to.

I just saw our forecast for the next week and starting tomorrow we will be in the 30s and go lower until next weekend.  Rain or snow every day.  We are to expect heavy rain and storms tonight.  I hope Tom will not want to go driving for Uber tonight.  It is 42 officially.

Mary Ann, my gramma used to say "A January thaw will freeze a dog" which meant watch out for the cold weather coming I guess.

Larry. If you are getting low on your Whey Protien powder Aldi have their Elevation brand for 15.99 Today. Seems to be $5 off.

Also if you like good beef USDA choice Bottom round roast on sale for $2.99. usually $4.29.  I cooked another one yesterday as family in town and so good. It comes in a Black bag. Sells out fast.  I will try and get one a little larger tomorrow and cut it in half.  What little that was left last night I make into a stew today. I like their certain meats that have never been frozen.

Mary Ann

Shirley, tomorrow's high is to be around 30 degrees and for a few days the highs will be in the 20s before starting up again.  As long as we don't have ice, we will be OK.  I never heard the expression by your grandmother but I know the January thaw can bring some weird weather.

Tom and I ate at Panera's today, mainly because I wanted to see if my keys were there.  The lady checked and said no keys had been turned in.  That was my only possibility of finding them as now I have no idea where I lost them.  I won't replace the car key and I have already replaced the garage and house keys.  I had a turkey sandwich today and cheese and broccoli soup.  Tom had the soup and a different sandwich which I don't remember but it sounded good.  Tonight I'm eating a roast beef sandwich, remnant of last night's roast beef.

Hi everyone on a bit foggy morning but in the mid-50's.  For the second day in a row we are expecting 70 degrees this afternoon.  Not bad for mid-January.  I will be gone all morning with coffee and then going to the church to have some papers witnessed for the Living Will and related document after I drop my friend off for coffee.  I am preparing them for both South Carolina and Georgia since we live in South Carolina but the hospital and most of our doctors are across the river in Georgia. Then I will go back to the cafe for the rest of the hour for coffee and then take my friend back to his assisted living facility.  Then another trip downtown to the Church for the Wisdom group.  Finally on my way home I will stop at Aldi's for just a few items.  That will be it for today.  I shouldn't have to cook supper tonight as the we a rotisserie chicken and some leftovers in the refrigerator for dinner so can have a quiet afternoon and evening.

We had a good meal at the Wednesday night dinner at Church and then a very nice visit with Scott and Jennifer.  Jennifer was much more relaxed last evening than a week ago and is enjoying living with her dad.  We also see that Scott seems much happier so this seems to be a win all around.

Mary Ann, glad the crown preparation went well.  That dental chair gets very tiresome.  I can think back on the many occasions when I was working and lived where we got lots of snow and now wonder how I managed.  I hope the heavy rain and storms missed your area last night.

Shirley, it sounds like your gramma was wise.  Good to see you posting and hope all is well.

JeanneP, thanks for the heads up on the Whey Protein powder. I saw that Aldi's had it but in the meantime Pat had ordered a big container of it off the Internet and we are set for many more sausage muffins.  That is a good price for the round roast.  We have used Aldi's meats and usually found them very satisfactory.  However, we have started getting out meats at COSTCO and they are very high quality.

Joan, it sounds like you are getting a life-time of snow this winter since you haven't been used to seeing it very often.  Snow is pretty will it is falling as long as one doesn't need to be out driving in it but the aftermath isn't so pleasant.

Marilyne, one always worries a bit when power is lost especially in storm type conditions.  Glad your power wasn't off too long.

wjoan

Tis ten a.m. and we are at 3 degrees here this morning.  Was 6 earlier so not sure what is going on.  I checked radar and there is nothing up there.  Anyway anothetr site said we were at 1 degree.   Who knows?  The weather people sure don't know.

angelface555

Good morning from a still snowing Interior! It surely must have broken our drought by now! Then Friday, Sandy you might be right about the paraskevidekatriaphobia or friggatriskaidekaphobia, because we are expected to drop to 40 below. This is the old style weather we haven't had since the early eighties, so we shall see.

Farrah is her usual energetic self and is pretty solid when she lands on or by you. I am amazed that she still is only seven pounds, as solid as she feels!

I also am back doing my PSP and Grammer lessons as they started again this week after the Christmas break so that I will be busy again!

Larry, I am so glad that Scott and Jennifer are doing well together similar to how Scott is doing with you and Pat close by. A win for all it seems!

Joan, we are presently at minus nine and unfortunately, our forecasters seem to be right on this winter!

MaryAnn, I need to get busy at the dentist again as well. I spent all of that money, pre-insurance, only to find that the glue they use has only a ten-year lifespan! Not something to be pleased about and not that they inform you about until it happens!!

Mary Ann

Patricia, I did not know there was a time limit on the glue used in crowns.  I am sure most of my crowns are over 10 years old and so far they show no signs of movement.  I'll worry about that when it happens.

The sun is shining here now, a pleasant surprise.  I think our temperature has not reached 30 yet, but may be very close.  The thermometer I refer to is between the garage and this building and I think gets some protection, especially when the sun does shine.

I didn't think about Friday being the 13th until Sandy mentioned it.  I'm not superstitious so I don't worry about it.  It's a fun thing.

We had a roast for supper a couple of nights ago and I just had a delicious roast beef sandwich made from that roast.  We don't have a roast often so when I can have a sandwich I love it.

Tom has said he would fill my humidifier but he needed a reminder.  I made up a note and put it on the floor at the top of the stairs where he'd see it.  Last evening I saw the note had been chewed on by our resident cat.  He has sometimes chewed on tissues and I try to keep them out of his way; I just never thought about the bond paper.  I showed it to Annie when she was here this morning and she laughed.  He may be her cat, but she misses out on so many of his activities and antics.

Mary Ann

Beverly

I hope it turns out to be a short winter for all of you in the north! I think you've already had your share of snow and cold.  :(

Our little cold snap is over and it's up to 80 this afternoon.

Been a busy week so I'm enjoying a "day off" and  trying to get some cleaning projects done.

Tonight there will be a full moon! I have strange dreams when the moon is full but I'm not worried about tomorrow.  (Friday the 13th)  ;)

Angelface - I have some phobias but those two aren't on my list!

Larry - I'm glad things are working out well for your son and granddaughter.  It's wonderful that you and Pat can now get to know her better.

Joan - Doesn't matter what the number is. Cold is COLD !

Mary Ann - I like the half-sandwich and soup combos at Panera's. I really like their Asiago bread.
